System76 at CES: Thelio Major desktop chosen to showcase both AMD and Gigabyte’s Latest Workstation-Class AI Hardware

Thermal-driven desktop dual-wields generative AI and 3D-rendering in custom tech demo

In collaboration with AMD and Gigabyte, System76 was tasked with debuting AMD’s Zen 4 Threadripper CPUs at CES, as well as the TRX50 Aero D motherboard. System76’s Thelio Major desktop is set to be showcased at both vendors’ booths at the conference.

Quality Assurance engineers at System76 put together a demo to show off the new Thelio Major’s speed. The demo automating renders alternated between Stable Diffusion and Blender using the following steps:

  1. Launch the demo using PyAutoGUI
  2. Open Terminal
  3. Launch SD.Next, SDXL Base 1.0 model
  4. Open a new workspace
  5. Launch Blender
  6. Navigate back to Stable Diffusion
  7. Input a random prompt from a long list of AI-generated prompts
  8. Does this 3 times
  9. Navigates back to Blender
  10. Renders the “Spring” scene
  11. Repeats steps 6 – 9
  12. Closes all windows
  13. Starts again

Stable Diffusion renders using the GPU, while Blender takes advantage of the Threadripper 7980X’s 64 cores and 128 threads. Gigabyte’s Thelio Major is equipped with the NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPU, while AMD’s system will put the hardware capabilities of the Radeon Pro W7900 on display. Both are equipped with the Threadripper 7980X CPU and a TRX50 Aero D motherboard.

System76 is also developing a Thelio Mega with Zen 4 Threadripper, which will likely release soon after the Thelio Major. Thelio Mega, System76’s most powerful desktop, is a quad-GPU workstation created specifically for professional AI workloads.

Released just this morning on System76’s website, visitors can sign up for email alerts as the Thelio Major and Thelio Mega with Threadripper become available.
