Teen-Driven Hack Club launches High Seas Coding Challenge
More than 5,200 teens have logged over 11,000 hours building projects for High Seas, a coding challenge that rewards their effort with sweet prizes — including 15 System76 Launch Keyboards.
At System76, our mission is to liberate the computer and build tools that empower you to make something inspiring — whether that's the next great invention or a fun website for your friends.
That's why we’re excited to support Hack Club and their High Seas adventure. Hack Club is a distributed network of more than 40,000 teenagers in over 119 countries who are building, tinkering, and collaborating with one another on projects.
Some recent examples of creativity at work include:
- PCB design and programming for a 4-port USB-C hub
- AI with integrity for schools, using Vercel and Chat GPT integrations
- Slackbots to automate community Wakatime updates
Hack Club is completely free for anyone under 18 to participate. You can sign up at High Seas, join their Slack community, and start shipping code right away. Here’s how the challenge works:
- Install the Wakatime extension to track coding effort
- Earn Doubloons, their virtual currency, for every hour of code shipped
- Get extra Doubloons for getting projects upvoted by the community
- Exchange Doubloons for booty that includes System76 Launch Keyboards, Raspberry Pi's, and other cool prizes!
High Seas runs through January 31, 2025, so there's plenty of time left to build whatever you like. Hack Club has set a goal of 15,000 High Seas participants shipping code this year. If you, your friends, or the teens in your life might be interested, please let them know about High Seas. Who knows? There just might be a System76 keyboard in it for them.
The System76 Launch Keyboard is an 84-key concoction made by keyboard enthusiasts at our factory in Denver. Its fully configurable layout (up to 4 layers) features a split space bar, enabling you to remap essential keys (Bksp, Shift, Fn, Esc) from the perimeter to a comfortable spot beneath your thumb. The Launch is crafted from milled aluminum and rests inert on your desk as you type, and includes a Super Speed USB hub (2 USB-A, 2USB-C) for fast file transfers.
