System76 Press Release: Software Freedom Day

Denver, July 18 – System76, a leading manufacturer of Linux computers known for its commitment to open-source principles, announces a partnership with the Digital Freedom Foundation (DFF) to support Software Freedom Day (SFD), which takes place on September 21, 2024.

This collaboration aims to increase awareness and participation in SFD. In addition to celebrating the importance of software freedom globally, SFD also advocates for digital rights and educates the public about the benefits of using free and open-source software. It’s a day for communities worldwide to come together and promote a more transparent, inclusive, and innovative digital world.

"Last year, DFF reported not having a single US-registered SFD event. With the support of companies like System76 and our shared commitment to digital freedoms, we aim to have at least ten Software Freedom Day events in the United States and double global participation in 2024.” said Jurgen, the Spokesperson of the Digital Freedom Foundation. “If you’re considering organizing an event, now is the time to get started and registering your event is really easy! Events can range from tiny evening gatherings to full-blown multi-day congresses."

The Huion Graphics Challenge

As part of this year's celebration, the DFF is excited to introduce the Huion Graphics Challenge. The challenge invites teams to organize workshops and local graphics events, showcasing the use of free and open-source graphics software. Participants will have the chance to compete in the challenge, with Huion generously awarding a high-quality graphics display-tablet to the winner and two smaller tablets for the runners-up.

Additional Community-Led Initiatives

To raise more awareness to the event, System76 will be bolstering its Global Sticker Rep program. The program partners with local Linux enthusiasts worldwide who distribute open source sticker packets. Previously, sticker sets included #RightToRepair, Unleash Your Potential, Ubuntu stickers, a variation of rocket stickers, and Pop!_OS stickers.

Now, as part of the collaborative efforts to revitalize Software Freedom Day, System76 will also include new sticker sets from the Digital Freedom Foundation. These new stickers feature messages like "I'm celebrating Software Freedom Day" and "Don't mess with my digital freedoms."

We’re hoping the addition of these new stickers getting distributed to the global reps will help encourage global Software Freedom Day event registration. Hopefully, doubling SFD events world-wide.

To receive your free sticker pack, send a self-addressed envelope to your local sticker rep at the System76.com merch page.
